J. Taylor Hays, MD, received his MD from Vanderbilt University in 1980 and completed Internal Medicine residency at Vanderbilt in 1984. He has been a Consultant at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, since 1991.

Currently Dr Hays is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and is Chair of the Division of General Internal Medicine. He is the current Associate Director for the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center. Dr Hays is actively engaged in clinical research on pharmacologic treatments for tobacco dependence and regularly provides clinical intervention for patients with tobacco dependence. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters on the treatment of tobacco use and dependence.
