Advancing the Understanding of the Mechanisms of Nicotine Dependence and Its Treatment
An Independent Competitive Grants Program Sponsored by Pfizer
Background
A grants award program is being initiated by Pfizer, to commence in 2008, with a mission to:
- Advance the understanding of the mechanisms of tobacco and nicotine dependence and its treatment.
An additional goal is to advance the career of junior researchers in the field of smoking cessation, researchers who have innovative research ideas but no previous experience as principal investigators.
Total Awards
It is anticipated that 12 awards will be granted in July 2008. Six awards open to all researchers will have an upper limit of US $150,000 and 6 additional awards specifically for junior researchers will have an upper limit of US $50,000. Award recipients will be chosen by a board of international reviewers who are all recognized leaders in the field of nicotine dependence and smoking cessation.
Scope of the Program
The program is open to both new and experienced researchers worldwide.
Basic and clinical research proposals should focus on mechanisms of tobacco and nicotine dependence and may be in any of the following areas:
- Genetics, molecular biology, neurobiology, and neuropharmacology
- Human laboratory (eg, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, cravings, withdrawal) and animal behavior
- Pharmacotherapy of smoking cessation and relapse, and/or its interaction with behavioral support
